World Tuberculosis (TB) Day : An Ayurvedic Perspective on Causes & Holistic Management

What is Tuberculosis (TB)?

Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious condition that primarily affects the lungs and is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Common symptoms include:

  • Persistent cough (sometimes with sputum)
  • Low-grade fever
  • Night sweats
  • Weight loss and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

⚠️ Early diagnosis and medical care are essential for proper management.

🪔 Ayurvedic View: Rajayakshma / Kshaya Roga

In Ayurveda, TB is understood as Rajayakshma, a condition of progressive tissue depletion (Dhatu Kshaya) and weakened Ojas (immunity).

🌿 Key Concepts

  • Tridosha imbalance (Vata -Pitta-Kapha involvement)
  • Vata dominance → tissue wasting, dryness
  • Pitta involvement → fever, inflammation
  • Kapha involvement → cough, mucus accumulation

🧬 Root Cause (Nidana)

Ayurveda highlights lifestyle and dietary factors as major contributors:

  • Ativyayama – Overexertion beyond capacity
  • Vega Dharana – Suppression of natural urges
  • Vishama Ahara – Irregular, unhealthy diet
  • Dhatu Kshaya – Depletion of body tissues

These factors gradually weaken Agni (digestion) and reduce Ojas they is immunity making the body more vulnerable to the infestation.

Early Warning Signs (Poorvaroopa)

  • Loss of appetite (Aruchi)
  • Weak digestion (Agnimandya)
  • Fatigue and weakness (Shrama)
  • Mild cough
  • Intermittent fever
  • Gradual weight loss
